Is a 6x10 wall vent a real upgrade over a 4x10?
Only slightly, on the numbers. The 6x10 measures 12.8 square inches of free area against the 4x10's 11.1, so 15 percent more, or 45 calculated CFM against 38, from a face half again as large. If you want a meaningful step up in the wall line, the 6x12 at 18.3 square inches is the size to look at.
Why is the 6x10 the least open wall vent you publish?
At 21 percent it is the lowest because it pairs a wide face with the 11.1 mm slot used on the smaller sizes. The 6x12 above it steps the inner tray in from 123.8 mm to 117.5 mm and opens the slot to about 14 mm, which is why percent open recovers to 25 percent there.
What rough opening does the 6x10 need?
146.1 mm by 247.7 mm. The 247.7 mm length matches the 3x10, 4x10 and 10x10, so if you are changing width only, the length of the existing cut is already correct. Confirm the width before ordering, because a 4x10 opening at 95.3 mm has to be widened by roughly 51 mm.
How do I measure for a replacement vent?
Measure the duct opening, not the old cover. Pull the existing vent out, measure the hole itself across the width and the length in millimetres, and match that to the duct dimension listed on this page. Vent sizes are named for the duct, so a vent called 4x10 has a face larger than 4 by 10 inches. Measuring the faceplate is the single most common reason a size arrives wrong.
