When to Install Floor Vents: A Renovation Checklist

Have undermount vents on site before flooring work starts. Fit drop-in vents once the finished opening is ready. In both cases, measure and choose the model early enough to resolve fit questions without recutting finished material.

Before ordering flooring Choose the vent and review its installation with the flooring installer. Measure the existing opening and check the intended frame dimensions.
Before flooring installation Have the actual vent ready; confirm base fixing, floor build-up and movement details. Confirm the finished cut and preserve any required flooring movement space.
During flooring work Follow the base-and-tray sequence in the product guide. Keep the opening clear and save an offcut if an inlay is wanted.
After dusty finishing work Complete the tray fit and check removability, support and open air passages. Clean the seating surfaces, fit the vent and check that it rests evenly.

If the flooring is already finished

The practical starting point is a drop-in model. An undermount retrofit may be possible, but it needs an installer to assess the surrounding floor and any cutting or lifting required. Do not assume the floor must be demolished, or that an undermount is a simple swap.

Before the crew arrives

  • Label every opening's measurements and location.
  • Check the actual selected-size drawing; do not cut from the nominal size alone.
  • Agree on flooring movement requirements around the vent.
  • Keep a matching offcut for each flooring material.
  • Protect unfinished openings without obstructing an operating HVAC system.
