3x10 vs 4x10 Floor Vents: Which Size Do You Need?

A 3x10 and a 4x10 vent have the same nominal length. The width of your duct opening decides which one to buy. Room type, flooring colour and the outside size of the old cover do not determine the size.

Once you have checked the opening, compare the 3x10 and 4x10 options on the Drop-In Floor Vent product page. Check the selected size drawing before ordering; the nominal name is not a fabrication tolerance.

Take these measurements

  1. Lift out the existing floor register. Protect the floor and keep fingers clear of sharp duct edges.
  2. Measure the clear width and length inside the duct opening, in inches or millimetres. Take readings at both ends and the middle.
  3. Record the smallest and largest readings. Note any bent boot edge, screw or flooring overhang that reduces the space.
  4. Check the space around the opening as well. The new frame needs to overlap and rest on sound flooring without hitting a wall or cabinet.

If the opening measures 3½ inches wide

Do not automatically round down to 3x10 or up to 4x10. An undersized body may move even if its frame conceals the hole; an oversized body may not seat. A cover hiding the cut edge does not establish a secure fit.

Send your width and length readings, a photo of the uncovered opening, and the vent style you want to Khan Supply CO support. Have a damaged boot or unsupported floor edge assessed before fitting a new cover. Do not enlarge the duct or add makeshift packing just to suit a purchase.

Choose the mounting style after the size

A larger nominal size is not an airflow upgrade for a smaller existing duct. If the room is uncomfortable, have the airflow issue assessed separately from selecting the cover.
