Supply vs Return Vents: Check Before Buying a Cover

A supply outlet sends conditioned air into the room. A return opening draws room air back to the HVAC system. Identifying that job helps you choose a cover, but size and location alone are not reliable proof.

Check the direction while the system is running

Hold a light piece of tissue securely near the face without letting it enter the opening. Air moving outward suggests supply; air drawing inward suggests return. If airflow is weak, the system is off, or the opening belongs to another ventilation system, this check may be inconclusive.

A bathroom exhaust fan also draws air inward, but it is not a heating-system return. Identify the equipment or have the opening checked if its purpose is unclear.

For a replacement floor supply cover

Measure the clear opening and compare the body, frame and intended application of the Drop-In Floor Vent. It leaves a visible perimeter frame. For a new floor with a level integrated finish, review the Undermount Flush Floor Vent with the flooring installer.

For a wall or ceiling opening

Compare the Framed Wall Vent for a defined border with the Flush Wall Vent for a mud-in finish. Check the exact model's drawing, support and overhead retention requirements where applicable.

A return needs sufficient free area for the system. Do not reduce an opening or choose a grille solely because its outside frame conceals the hole. The existing filter-access arrangement must remain serviceable too.

For a bathroom exhaust fan

Use a cover or mount compatible with the fan housing and attachment requirements. The dedicated 14x14 exhaust-mount option is a separate application, not a generic return-air size. See the exhaust-cover compatibility checklist.

Before ordering

  • Identify the opening's purpose.
  • Measure the uncovered opening at several points.
  • Check the selected product's dimensions, mounting and required airflow.
  • Preserve access to filters and removable components.
  • Keep supply and return paths unobstructed; do not use widespread register closing as a substitute for system balancing.
