For an existing vinyl plank floor, start with a correctly sized drop-in vent. For an undermount finish, plan the vent as part of the flooring installation. First confirm whether your vinyl is floating or glued down; the installation requirements are not interchangeable.
The Drop-In Floor Vent fits from above and leaves a visible perimeter frame. The 2-in-1 version includes a metal insert when you do not have matching flooring to use in the tray.
Protect a floating floor's movement
Follow the instructions for your exact flooring product on expansion space around fixed objects and openings. There is no universal 3–6 mm gap that suits all vinyl plank. Do not screw through, glue down or tightly trap a floating plank beneath a vent assembly unless the flooring and vent instructions explicitly allow that detail.
A frame can overlap the cut edge visually while the plank retains its required movement space. Have the flooring installer confirm both the cut and the support beneath the vent. The overlap is not a substitute for a supported installation.
Check the complete floor build-up
- Record plank thickness and any permitted underlayment.
- Measure the clear duct opening, not the old cover's outside dimensions.
- Check that the vent body clears the boot, including any lip or screw inside it.
- Dry-fit on the finished floor and check that the frame sits evenly without rocking.
Vinyl plank comes in different thicknesses and constructions. Do not choose a vent by assuming all LVP is thinner than the floor it replaced. If a vent binds or moves, use the fit troubleshooting guide before altering the opening.
If you want an undermount vent
The Undermount Flush Floor Vent needs to be planned before the surrounding flooring is laid. Review the base-tray fixing and height adjustment with the installer, together with the vinyl manufacturer's movement requirements. Use the undermount installation guide for the product sequence.
Using a flooring offcut in the tray
Save spare material from the same flooring batch. Measure the actual tray and check the permitted insert build-up before cutting. A matching offcut can make the centre less conspicuous, but it must not bridge the air passages or stop the removable section from seating. The included metal insert and a customer-supplied flooring inlay are different options.
Before ordering several vents, measure each opening. Use the measurement checklist and check the selected product's size drawing and availability in your country.
