A metal insert is a finished panel. A flooring inlay is a piece of your own flooring cut to fit the tray. They provide different looks, and neither should be confused with the complete vent.

Check replacement-insert compatibility
The separate insert pack is for Khan Supply CO's 3x10 and 4x10 Drop-In and Upgraded 2-in-1 Floor Vents. It is not for undermount floor vents, framed wall vents or flush wall vents.

The size label names the vent the insert fits, not the panel's dimensions. Do not buy the separate pack for a 4x12 vent or an unidentified register. Check the current product options or ask support about your existing vent first.
When the metal panel makes sense
It is the simpler option if matching offcuts are unavailable or you prefer a black centre. The panel lifts out for cleaning or a later change of finish. You do not need to cut flooring just to complete the look.
When to use a flooring inlay
Use an offcut from the same floor when you want the grain, colour or tile surface to continue across the centre. Dry-fit the material and confirm the permitted build-up and attachment method for your vent. Keep the perimeter slots open and the removable section accessible.
Do not cut the inlay to the nominal duct size. Use the actual tray dimensions and model instructions. Check grain direction or grout alignment before cutting; save another offcut in case you need to replace it later.
An inlay does not change the mounting method
A drop-in vent still has a visible outer frame, even when its centre matches the floor. For a level installation integrated into new flooring, compare the Undermount Flush Floor Vent. Its parts and installation differ from the drop-in line.
